The commencement of the SSC exams in Sindh has once again raised the spectre of the cheating culture that continues unabated even though the Sindh government insists that efforts have been made to address the issue. This practice is deeply embedded in our education institutions. The main reason behind the widespread cheating culture is weak controls by the relevant authorities. At many schools and colleges, students can easily take their cheating material – including mobile phones and notes – without getting caught. The lack of seriousness showed by both teachers and students is worrisome.
We are living in a highly competitive world and need to realise that it is important to pay undivided attention to our studies. It is also important to point out that invigilators should carry out their duties in a strict manner. If teachers will show leniency, students will not abstain from using unfair means during examinations. It is time the authorities took strict measures to counter the widespread cheating culture from the country.
