Karachi’s garbage crisis is partly due to the authorities’ incompetence and partly due to residents’ carelessness. Both the problems should be dealt with in a timely manner to counter the garbage problem. It is suggested that large numbers of incinerators should be set up in the vicinity of landfill sites. In this way, waste materials can be burnt in incinerators which will produce steam that is used to generate electricity.
On the other hand, to ensure that people do not throw garbage in streets, the government should study the model adopted by foreign countries where people do not litter in public places. There is a need to launch a campaign on both the print and electronic media to encourage people to stop the habit of carelessly discarding garbage. Dustbins should be installed at all places so that people can dispose of garbage in a responsible manner.
