LAHORE : Some 3,500 women have been trained free in rural and urban areas in five districts of Punjab through the Women on Wheels (WOW) initiative of Strategic Reforms Unit (SRU) of the Punjab government.

The initiative has been taken to ensure gender equality, reclaiming public spaces for women and to provide freedom of mobility to 49 percent of women in Punjab, said Salman Sufi, Director General Strategic Reforms Unit. He was talking to participants in the 7th edition of the City Dialogue held by Urban Unit here on Saturday.

It was introduced in 2015 and it intends to train 40,000 more women in coming months. The second phase is all set to introduce a subsidized bike scheme exclusively for women in Punjab.

He said that Strategic Reforms Unit had introduced 30 such reforms since progressive societies depend on women’s development and initiatives to groom women while making them excel individually too. Women are the face of progressive Pakistan and it was time we started recognizing the fact that they own the country as much men do.

It is also imperative for Pakistan as a society to portray its peace loving image instead of negative propaganda by certain sectors.

He also shared success stories from real life across Punjab where Women on Wheels has made some real difference in changing the lives of women and girls enabling them to be productive members of families and society.

The dialogue on ‘Why Women on Wheels’ was attended by a large number of youths, mainly students from various universities, researchers and transport engineers.
