Netanyahu’s speech to the US Congress has brought to surface inherent tensions in US-Israel relations. In the first place, the invitation extended to him by the House speaker, being a leading Republican opponent to Barack Obama, has created a bad political precedent in the US.
The open defiance displayed by both the Republicans and Democrats to the White House added greater significance to the invitation. Netanyahu’s stance over the US-Iran nuclear deal was snubbed by Obama. All this war of words between the US president and the Israeli prime minister boils down to one conclusion, ie, Netanyahu’s last ditch effort to stall the deal is aimed at creating another Iraq-like situation which the economies of the US and its western allies can hardly afford now.
