SUKKUR: Water Commission Chairman Justice (retd) Ameer Hani Muslim on Friday expressed his shock and dismay over the insanitary conditions of the water supply schemes and the high level of contamination in water being supplied to the city during inspection of different water schemes in Sukkur. Terming the standards of Sukkur municipal services as “unacceptable,” he said highly polluted water comprising harmful effluents is discharged into the canals which in turn is being supplied to the city virtually untreated. The Chairman Water Commission asked the “Mayor of Sukkur if he could drink the water being supplied to the city.” Admonishing the mayor, he advised him to stop supplying water to the people rather than to provide them with highly contaminated water which was not even fit for animals. Justice (retd) Ameer Hani Muslim directed Additional Session Judge Rohri to register complaints of the citizens regarding quality of drinking water and furnish report to Water Commission over action taken against those responsible. He also directed the Town Municipal Officers to ensure clean up of the water tanks within two days to supply hygienic water to the citizens. The Chariman Water Commission also directed Sukkur administration to take action against the industrial units, which are not treating their industrial effluents before disposing them off. The Chairman Water Commission also directed Secretary Irrigation Mustafa Jamal to release the salaries of the employees who have not been paid for several month. Justice (retd) Muslim also directed appointing a chemist in order to functionalise the laboratory of Water Scheme Phase 1. Earlier, Mayor Sukkur Arsalan Islamuddin Shaikh informed the commission that there are 100 drainage points from where industrial and domestic effluents are discharged into the Indus without any treatment.
