Most part of the bed of the Ravi remains dry, especially during the winter. People keep on visiting the dry part of the river-bed. In February, people also lift sand in tractor-trolleys. They build temporary banks inside the bed of the river to divert the water-current.
On the day of the incident, when people were on the dry part of the bed-river, a temporary bank broke suddenly. A mighty wave of water moved towards the people. They found no way to come out of the river and ran towards a relatively high-level ground inside the river. In no time, there was water everywhere around victims and the place where they took refuge looked like an island.
A passerby informed the rescue teams about victims. Rescue teams reached the incident place on information. They brought back victims on the bank on rescue boats.
Abdullah, 55, told the media that he went inside the river to take “saag”. He was busy in his work when suddenly saw a wave of water moving towards him.
Nasir and Yasir, both brothers, told the media that they were workers and were on leave. They came to visit the river, they told.
