ISLAMABAD: Justice (R) Syed Asghar Haider has been appointed as the new Prosecutor General of the National Accountability Bureau. The Ministry of Law and Justice issued a notification regarding the appointment on Wednesday.

The appointment ends the longstanding impasse between the NAB and federal government, which had prompted the Supreme Court to take notice of the delay in the appointment of the NAB Prosecutor General.

The name of Justice (R) Syed Asghar Haider was in the list of five nominees which the NAB has sent to the government for the appointment of Prosecutor General. Besides Justice (R) Syed Asghar Haider, the NAB has sent the names of Shah Khawar, Nasir Saeed Sheikh, Fasihul Mulk and Mudassar Khalid Abbasi for the post of Prosecutor General NAB.

But two days back, the government told the Supreme Court that the President has rejected the proposed names sent by the NAB but just after a day the Prime Minister approved the name of Justice (R) Syed Asghar Haider and the Law Ministry notify him as the new Prosecutor General of the NAB.

The Prosecutor General's position had been vacant since November 23, 2017 when former PG Waqar Qadeer Dar left office after completing his three-year tenure.
