LAHORE: The Punjab Commission on the Status of Women (PCSW) completed training of 3,613 Nikah Registrars and Local Government Officials in Sahiwal Division. This includes 3,208 Nikah Registrars, 82 Union Council Chairmen and 323 Union Council Secretaries. They were trained to fill the Nikah-nama correctly and various procedures including marriage registration in Sahiwal, Okara and Pakpattan districts. A total of 140 sessions were conducted by the PCSW trainers. In Pakpattan 800 participants including 732 Nikah Registrars, 56 Union Council Secretaries, and 12 Chairmen were trained on proper filling of Nikah-nama and recent pro-women amendments in legislation. In Sahiwal, 1,073 participants including 951 Nikah Registrars, 97 Union Council Secretaries, and 25 chairmen, while in Okara 1,740 participants including 1,525 Nikah Registrars, 170 Union Council Secretaries, and 45 chairmen were trained.
Topics covered in the training included fundamental rights in the Constitution of Pakistan, Muslim Family Laws with amendments promulgated in 2015, Nikah-nama, registration of marriage, dower, polygamy, responsibilities of nikah registrar, laws to prevent underage marriage, divorce, khula’a and other grounds of dissolution of marriage, and procedures for birth registration.
Punjab Commission on the Status of Women Chairperson Fauzia Viqar said the Nikah-nama was a document of utmost importance. She said adequate filling of Nikah-nama empowered a woman.
