Wapda, Sindh make impressive start

KARACHI: Holders Wapda were off to an impressive start in both men’s and women’s team events while Sindh had a nice day in the women’s team event as the 54th National Table Tennis Championships, carrying all mega stars of the country, exploded into action here at the Majeed Gymnasium of Islamia Club on Saturday.
In the men’s team event opening fixture Wapda defeated Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL 3-0 while in the second fixture the defending champions tamed Islamabad 3-0 to qualify for the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile in the women’s team event fixtures Wapda crushed National Highway Authority (NHA) and Islamabad with an identical scoreline 3-0.
Meanwhile Sindh enjoyed smooth sail in the women’s team event initial rounds when they upstaged Islamabad and NHA with an identical scoreline of 3-0.
Earlier, Pakistan Table Tennis Federation (PTTF) chief SM Sibtain formally opened the championship which will last till January 11.
In the event seven gold medals are up for grab in men’s team event, women’s team event, men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles.
Men’s singles title is vacant as Saleem Abbas, who lifted crown in last edition, has wrapped-up his career, while Ayesha Iqbal of Wapda, now known as Ayesha Sharjeel after her marriage, will defend women’s singles crown.
