In a somewhat hilarious manner, a lone robber, armed with a pistol and a grenade, took over Rs1 million from a bank in Buffer Zone on Wednesday and actually walked away from its premises pushing his broken-down motorcycle.
Police said a bearded man wearing shalwar-kameez entered the Bank Al-Habib Branch in Buffer Zone in the afternoon despite the presence of armed security guards there. He showed the pistol and the grenade to the bank staff and told them to hand over the cash to him.
On seeing the man, the staff ran for cover. The robber then broke the glass shield of a cash counter and took Rs1,054,630.
Taimuria SHO Humayun Khan said police had acquired the CCTC footage of the robbery.
“He appears to be an amateur robber who had even forgotten his pistol at the cash counter. After realising his mistake, he returned to collect it,” the officer added.
The SHO said the police were trying to ascertain as to how the robber had managed to enter the bank despite the presence of security guards outside its gate as well as inside it.
After collecting the cash in a bag and leaving the bank, the robber was unable to start his motorcycle and the CCTV footage showed him pushing it away, but none of the guards stopped him from escaping. The police have registered an FIR against the robber on the complaint of the bank staff.
