KPK upset Punjab to win hockey gold

ISLAMABAD: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) earned title in hockey on the final day on Friday as Punjab scooped up overall trophy in the Second Quaid-i-Azam Inter-Provincial Games winning 74 gold medals in the process.

KPK defeated Punjab on penalty shootout to win the hockey gold in presence of a good crowd. After goalless draw at scheduled time, both teams were given five penalty shoot-outs each with KPK winning the title beating Punjab 4-2.

Punjab returned as overall champions of the Quaid-i-Azam Games. Punjab also won 46 silvers and 31 bronze to take their overall medal tally to 151.Balochistan stood second by winning 26 gold, 22 silver and 38 bronze medals to get aggregate medal tally to 86. KPK with 21 gold, 24 silver and 51 bronze medals earned third spot. Sindh finished fourth and Fata grabbed fifth position.

Punjab also took away boxing honours winning four of the 10 gold at stake with Balochistan earning three gold medals. Sindh, KPK and Fata also picked up one gold each. Punjab earned gold medals through Mohammad Naeem (52kg), Shoaib Khan (56kg), Saeed Ali (81kg) and Aitzaz Khalid (91kg). Balochistan got gold through Mohibullah (60kg), Shafiullah (69kg) and Faisal Khan (75kg).

Sheroz Kachi (Sindh, 49kg), Amir Masood (64kg, KPK) and Irfan Khan (Fata, 91kg) also captured gold medals in boxing.Islamabad’s Alia won the women’s badminton singles gold beating Punjab’s Kausar in the final. Aqsa and Kauser combined in to win the women’s doubles title. Punjab also claimed badminton women’s team gold beating Sindh in the decider.

Punjab swept men’s singles doubles and team gold in badminton with Muqeet winning singles and then combining with Amer won the doubles.Fata captured four of the eight gold medals that were on offer for men’s category in the taekwondo event. Mohammad Nasir (63kg), Jibran Nasir (74kg), Gulbadin Hikmatyar (81kg) and Mazhar Ali (87kg) won gold medals for Fata.

Balochistan took two gold medals through Shahzaib (54kg) and Zubair Ahmad (68kg). Islamabad got gold through Hasan Anjum (58kg) with KPK also winning gold through Khalid in 87kg category.

Gilgat-Baltistan scooped up four gold medals in the women’s taekwondo with Malika Ali (62kg), Mawish Karim (60kg), Lubna (73kg) and Manisha Ali (73kg). Punjab got two gold medals through Lahraib Mannan (49kg) and Flower Zaheer (53kg) while KPK won taekwondo gold through Zainab (57kg). Saba Ishaq (46kg) also captured gold for Islamabad.

Punjab claimed men’s volleyball gold with KPK ending up with silver and Balochistan won bronze. Punjab also won women’s volleyball gold while AJK and Sindh finishing second and third respectively.Balochistan dominated the wushu event with six gold medals. Shah Hussain (36kg), Nazir Ali (38kg), Rahmatullah (40kg), Liaquat Ali (48kg), Mohammad Atif (75kg) and Gul Mohammad (80kg) were the gold medal winners.

Shukran Rizwan’s won rare gold for AJK in the 44kg men’s wushu category. Sindh also won gold medals through Waqar Abbasi (52kg), Mohammad Bilal (60kg) and Asim Khan (56kg) in wushu. Punjab got gold medal in wushu through Haider Ali (70kg).
