KARACHI: WAPDA successfully defended the title when they beat Navy 3-1 in the final of the 50th National Men’s Seniors Volleyball Championship which concluded at the POF Sports Complex Wah Cantt on Sunday.
The set scores were 25-22, 26-28, 25-17, 25-18. Earlier, Army defeated PAF 3-1 to claim the third position.The scores were 26-24, 21-25, 25-18, 25-20. Navy entered the court amid huge support from the crowd and had an aggressive start. Wasit and Abuzar put pressure on WAPDA, giving them no rooms to dominate. They smashed forcefully and also blocked WAPDA’s rallies effectively.
In the last moments of the first set, Naseer Ahmad and Muneer Khan rescued their team with three straight points to end the game 25-22 in WAPDA’s favour.In the second set, Navy’s Mubashir, Wasit and Abuzar again earned some valuable points and maintained the lead till 23-21. WAPDA staged a fine fight-back but Navy managed a 28-26 win.
WAPDA came in reinvigorated in the third set, with great power spiking from their smashers to earn a 25-17 victory to make it 2-1. Wasit and Asif earned four points in a row within a few minutes in the fourth set for Navy who were leading 10-8 at one stage. WAPDA, featuring a bunch of international players, then took control of the situation and managed a 25-18 win to complete the title triumph.
