Bail rejected in organ transplant case

LAHORE: Additional District and Sessions Judge Ghulam Murtaza Oppal, Friday dismissed post-arrest bail of Dr Fawad Mumtaz, one of the prime accused in illegal organ transplant case.

Federal Investigation Agency had arrested Dr Zafar Javed, Dr Fawad Mumtaz, Athar Mehmood, Naveed Hameed, Muhammad Saqi, Ashfaq Qamar Abbas over their alleged involvement in organ transplant trade.

During the investigation, Dr Zafar Javed revealed that he did not possess the degree of FCPS in anaesthesia but was still studying, and he was simply an MBBS degree holder. He admitted initially having illegally transplanted kidneys of more than 100 patients in Lahore, Gujrat and Mirpur, Azad Kashmir.

A heinous racket comprised of Fawad Mumtaz Khan, plastic surgeon, Muhammad Altamash Zafar Javed has not yet completed FCPS while Shahzad and Umar Draz were involved in illegal organ transplantation cases. Dr Zafar Javed disclosed he had given anaesthesia to around more than 100 donors and recipients.

LGH nurses lauded: Lahore General Hospital (LGH) nurses have been awarded twice in the current year with appreciation certificates and special awards by the DG Nursing. According to a hand out issued here on Friday, keeping in view, the discipline, patient friendly behavior and courteous attitude, DG Nursing Kausar Parveen has awarded certificates of appreciation to 14 nurses of LGH. Professor of Neuro Surgery Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood, Nursing Exam Controller Zubaida Ishaque, Nursing AMS Dr Shabnam Gulzar, Nursing Superintendent Razia Bano and nurses were present on the occasion.

Kausar said the certificate would be part of ACRs of the concerned nurses so they could be benefitted by them for promotion. Prof Khalid said nursing is a sacred profession and those who are working for this noble cause are the agents of nature serving the ailing humanity.

He said sometime nurses also became victim of the disease by the patient but they continue to work for their betterment. He referred the dengue war of 2011 when a student nurse of LGH Asma Kanwal sacrificed her life. He said Asma was the Florence Nightingale of Pakistan and a role model for all nurses.

He said for the first time in Punjab, nurses are being sent abroad and the credit for it goes to Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif. Nurses expressed determination to continue their efforts and perform duty with more zeal and fervor. Nasira Latif, Fauzia Manzoor, Gulshan Rafique, Ruban Emonile, Saba Qamar, Ayesha Tariq, Meena Jamil, Shakeela Nawab, Mafia Ramzan, Sonia Abbas, Saadia Kiran, Sidra Noor, Easter Arif and Sania Abdur Rehman received the appreciation certificates.
