Iodine deficiency’s hazards listed

HAFIZABAD: EDO (health) Dr Muhammad Aslam Shaheen Thursday said severe iodine deficiency causes mental retardation, low mental capability, still births, reproductive failures and other troubles.
Addressing a moot regarding training for salt processors of Hafizabad jointly organized by department of health and an NGO, he said a severe iodine deficiency in school aged children has reduced from 23 per cent to 2 per cent due to effective implementation of Universal Salt iodization Programme.
He said severe iodine deficiency in mothers has reduced from 37 per cent to 4 per cent only, as depicted in national nutrition survey 2011.
Ehtsham-Ul-Haq Tariq of the NGO said with the use of iodized salt students’ educational performance will improve.
