ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority on Saturday blocked transmission of the news satellite television channels for alleged violation of the Pemra code of conduct for the coverage of the Faizabad operation.
Social media outlets were also found to be either blocked or functioning very slowly most of the time, particularly after the shutting down of the private TV channels’ transmission.
Social media, particularly the Facebook and Twitter were the only available sources of information for some time. But soon Facebook and Twitter were also not accessible.
However, the state-run Pakistan Television continued its transmission. Pemra said that it is informed that under the Electronic Media (Programmes and Advertisement) Code of Conduct, 2015, live coverage of any security operation is prohibited. Private TV channels managed live coverage of the operation for at least 3-4 hours since its launch at around 7:30am.
“Therefore, all satellite TV channel licensees are directed to exhibit utmost sensitivity on the matter and comply with clause 8 (8) of the code of conduct in letter and spirit and refrain from live coverage of the on-going operation at Faizabad,” the authority said.
Pemra also requested the media houses to ensure safety and security of their staff.
In this context, camera crews and reporters should not go beyond the point as identified by the in charge of the operation and ensure cooperation with the law-enforcement agencies.
“In case of any kind of violation, observed, reported, strict action under the relevant provisions of Pemra
laws would be initiated,” it warned.
