LANDIKOTAL: A polio worker was killed and another was wounded when unidentified gunmen ambushed a health department team in Kaskay Sheen Pokh area of Loey Shalman on the border with Afghanistan, local and official sources said on Saturday.
The sources said that the health team was on the way to Landikotal hospital from Loey Shalman to attend a health-related meeting.
“Several gunmen sitting near the roadside opened indiscriminate fire on the vehicle carrying the health team,” a local source in Sheen Pokh told The News.
Two persons, identified as Zyat Wali, son of Zar Ali, and Bacha Khan, son of Amroz Khan, sustained bullets wounds.
The sources said the assailants fled the scene after committing the crime.
The injured persons were shifted to the Agency Headquarters Hospital, Landikotal where one of the injured Zyat Wali, who was a driver, succumbed to his injuries.
Soon after the incident, sources said, Landikotal’s assistant political agent Muhammad Tayyab Abdullah dispatched a contingent of Khassadars and Levies force to the site to secure the place and collect the evidence for investigation.
It was learnt that the polio teams regularly hold meetings on every Saturday to prepare the plan for the anti-polio campaign.
