After reports of expired Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) administered to children at a Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) run hospital surfaced, Director Health Services Karachi on Friday ordered the town health officer (THO) to report to him within the next 24 hours.
Parents of children at the Sobhraj Maternity Hospital, near Urdu Bazaar maintained the vaccine did not have the chain -embossed on the vial of the vaccine denoting the vaccine is usable -.
The matter was reported to the officials of Sindh Extended Programme on Immunisation.
Director Health Services Karachi Dr Zafar Aijaz while speaking to The News said he had sought a report from the THO Saddar Dr Shams Shaikh.
He said all KMC-run hospitals had been ordered to take the polio vaccination seriously.
“In case of expiry of the vaccine the vials should be disposed of properly and should not be given to children in any case,” he added.
