Historic bill
The Senate has finally passed the access to information bill. This is a major breakthrough as far as individuals’ constitutional rights are cornered. It is hoped that this much-needed bill will soon be passed by the lower house. This bill will promote the culture of transparency and accountability in the public sector.
In compliance with Article 19 of the constitution, this bill will enable the common man to access the record of public authorities. This will discourage the spread of disinformation and rumours. The success of the bill lies in its implementation in true letter and spirit. In this case, awareness among the people regarding the effectiveness of the bill carries more weight. It is hoped that this bill will prove to be a major step taken towards the protection of citizen’s right. It will also help increase the accountability of public office holders.
