ISLAMABAD: Chairman All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) General (R) Pervez Musharraf has paid homage to the most onerous and tireless efforts of the deceased sister Dr Ruth Katharina Martha Pfau in eradicating leprosy from Pakistan.
In his message on Saturday, Musharraf said that Dr Pfau was like a compassionate angel for humanity who served leprosy patients with utmost care and devotion. Before Dr Pfau came to Pakistan in 1960, leprosy was perceived an evil illness and even closest relatives of the patients use to leave them alone outside the city in filthy places to die a miserable death.
Dr Pfau took all those patients to her care. She served and treated the patients and finally in 1995 Pakistan became a leprosy-free country for which the full credit goes to Dr Pfau.
Pervez Musharraf said that Dr Pfau left her most developed country, most luxury life and devoted herself to the service of patients suffering horrible disease. Dr Pfau owes great deal to Pakistani nation.
Meanwhile, APML Secretary General Dr Muhammad Amjad said that Dr Pfau is a national hero. She not only eradicated a disease but also established an example of service for humanity. All the honours bestowed on her, were less than what she deserved. Dr Pfau will always live in the hearts and minds of Pakistani people, Dr Amjad also said.
