CHARSADDA: Journalists, traders, students and representatives of civil society organisations on Wednesday staged a protest against the alleged police torture on a local journalist and asked the high-ups to take note of the occurrence.

The protesters were carrying banners and placards inscribed with slogans against the torture on the journalist and local police. The rally started from the Charsadda Press Club and turned into a rally at Farooq-e-Azam Chowk.

A large number of journalists, traders, activists of political parties, representatives of All Teachers Association and civil society organisations participated in the protest.

The speakers said the police was trying to muzzle the freedom of the Press and turned to use of cheap tactics against media men.

They said the police subjected a local journalist to torture and general secretary of Charsadda Press Club Ihsanullah Sherpao.

“The police are trying to dictate the journalists and creating hurdles for them in performance of their professional responsibilities,”
said Sabz Ali Tareen, the president of the Charsadda Press Club.

He said the journalists would stage a protest against the police excesses on August 14 and would announce future course of line.
