A man was arrested for murdering his wife over domestic issues in the city’s Bhittaiabad area, police reported on Sunday.
Investigators said the accused, identified as Adeel, had confessed to the crime. The murder took place at the couple’s house in Gulistan-e-Jauhar’s Bhittaibabad locality and the victim, Sobia, was strangled to death by Adeel.
Officials said Adeel and Sobia had been married around four years ago, and the accused claimed that his barbaric act was driven by daily quarrels over domestic issues. Sobia’s body was shifted to a hospital for a post-mortem and a case had been registered by the police.
Due to lax implementation of women protection laws, cases of such brutal domestic violence remain a regular occurrence even in urban centres such as Karachi. On March 24 this year, a man had strangled his wife to death at their North Karachi residence for being unable to serve him breakfast on time.
The killer, 47-year-old Manzoor Ahmed, was infuriated over the delay in being served his breakfast and brutally beat up his wife Sajjan Baloch, 18, before strangling her to death.
Khawaja Ajmer Nagri SHO Asif Munawar had told The News that an autopsy had revealed more torture marks on her body suggesting that she was regularly subjected to torture. The killer had initially tried to mislead the police by claiming Sajjan had taken her own life but confessed to the murder when he was taken in for interrogation.
