Shah Jehan Kareem laid to rest at IoBM
Karachi: Former Sindh chief secretary and founder of the Institute of Business Management (IoBM), Shah Jehan Syed Kareem, was laid to rest at the varsity’s campus on Tuesday.
Funeral prayers for Kareem, who passed away on Monday aged 84, were offered at the university campus at 1pm. The prayers and burial were held at the varsity in line with the IoBM founder’s wish.
Family members said the former bureaucrat had been suffering from multiple diseases and had been admitted to a hospital for the past two weeks.
Survived by five children – four sons and one daughter – Kareem was born in Patna, India, and completed his higher education from Aligarh University.
Later on he went to the United States for his postgraduate education and obtained a degree in political science from the University of Arizona.
Soon after his return to Pakistan, he took the Central Superior Services examination and qualified in 1957. Kareem worked in the civil services for over 37 years, holding a number of senior positions with the government of Pakistan, including federal secretary information, chairman of Pakistan Television Corporation and Radio Pakistan, as well as with the government of Sindh from where he retired as chief secretary in 1994.
Kareem also worked with the United Nations as an International Civil Servant for almost a decade. He also studied Public Administration at Cambridge University, UK; Transportation Management at the University of British Columbia, Canada and was a fellow of the Economic Development Institute of the World Bank.
