The government’s concerted efforts to overcome and eliminate the menace of electricity crisis are commendable. Following the federal government’s footsteps, the Punjab government is also making its valuable positive contributions in this regard by establishing new gas, coal and solar energy power plants in different parts of the province. It is good to note that these efforts of the federal and provincial governments are gradually yielding desired results and more power is being added to the national grid. Recently, the Sahiwal coal-fired power plant became functional. The plant is most likely to contribute 1320 MW of power to the national grid. The provincial government is also planning to set up a 1200 megawatt gas-fired power plant in southern Punjab.
With gas power plant at Jhang becoming functional in less than a week from now and the Sahiwal power plant already operational, both the coal- and gas-fired plants will be generating substantial 2550 MW of power, making positive contribution towards overcoming prevailing power shortage. Through these power plants, the lingering menace of electricity loadshedding will be eliminated in the coming months.
