Pakistani elected to ILO body

Muhammad Zahoor Awan, Central General Secretary of Pakistan Workers’ Federation (PWF), has been elected member of the Geneva-based International Labour Organisation’s (ILO’s) governing body for the next three years.

This was shared with The News by the PWF’s country office representatives in Lahore and through an ILO handout issued on this occasion. 

The elections for the governing body were held in the Assembly Hall of the United Nations (UN) in Geneva, Switzerland. The workers’ representatives from 185 ILO member countries were present on the occasion.

The governing body is the executive body of the ILO and meets three times a year, in March, June and November. It takes decisions on ILO policy, decides the agenda of the international labour conference, adopts the draft programme and budget of the organisation for submission to the conference, and elects the director general. The body has representatives of governments, employers and workers from the member states but this time Pakistan could win a workers' seat only.Pakistan Ambassador’s to World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr Tauqir Shah congratulated Zahoor Awan on this achievement and hosted a dinner for the Pakistani delegation to ILO’s international labour conference and human rights conference, held in Geneva.

The Pakistani delegation comprised of Minister for Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development (MOPHRD) Sadruddin Shah Rashdi, Minister for Human Rights Senator Michael Kamran, MNA Shaista Pervaiz Malik, President Employers Federation of Pakistan Majyd Aziz, Secretary General PWF Zahoor Awan, Ambassador Farrukh Amil, Barrister Zafarullah, Secretary MOPHRD Sohail Aamir, Secretary Human Rights Rabiya Javeri, Joint Secretary MOPHRD Atifa Raffat and Secretary Labour KP Khayyam Hasan Khan.
