Over the first fortnight of Ramazan, the city’s administrative authorities have imposed fines amounting to Rs12.89 million on 4,784 shopkeepers found guilty of overcharging.
Karachi Commissioner Ejaz Ahmad Khan, while sharing details of the campaign on Monday, said 70 repeat offenders had been jailed for incessant violations of the official price list.
He said those penalized include 246 milk sellers, 729 grocers, 386 poultry sellers, 830 green grocers, 1,766 fruit sellers, 295 butchers, 413 confectioners and 119 sellers of miscellaneous items. The district and divisional administrations, he said, were making all possible efforts to ensure compliance with the official prices.
Khan said assistant commissioners and mukhtiarkars were extensively involved in supervisory activities in Liaquatabad, Saddar, Civil Lines, Garden, SITE, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Nazimabad, North Nazimabad, Orangi, Korangi, Baldia Town, New Karachi, Landhi, Model Colony, Ibrahim Hyderi, Malir and other areas. He said his administration would do everything in its power to avert an unwarranted rise in the cost of fruits and vegetables.
