QAU rusticates 26 students over May 20 violence
ISLAMABAD: The Qauid-i-Azam University has rusticated 26 students over involvement in the recent violence on campus.
The development comes on the recommendation of a disciplinary committee formed by the vice-chancellor to fix responsibility for the May 20 armed clash among members of the university’s Sindhi and Baloch student councils, which had left at least 35 students injured.
The police were called in to restore peace on campus had tear-gassed students and made arrests before the administration suspended educational activities and closed the boys’ hostels until further orders.
Earlier, the rusticated students were stopped from attending their respective classes and sitting examinations until their clearance by the disciplinary committee. Among them were 20 hostellers and the rest day scholars. They’re enrolled in various bachelor’s and master’s courses.
According to a relevant QAU staff member, 26 students after being found involved in the May 20 violence have been rusticated from the university for two semesters i.e. spring and fall 2017.
He also said a fine of Rs30,000-50,000 each, cancellation of hostel accommodations and permanent ban on further admission in the university were other major penalties imposed on the students. The staff member said the administration had formally informed the relevant departments and sections about the development for compliance or necessary action.
