On Sunday (May 28), residents of Karachi welcomed Ramazan and witnessed the electricity breakdown during the first Sehri. Before the arrival of the holy month, almost everyone had feared that unannounced loadshedding will create difficulties for the people who will fast. And this is exactly what happened on the first day of Ramazan. Although KE had claimed that there will be no power disruption during Sehri and Iftar, residents had to take both meals in darkness. Fasting in summer is always hard and loadshedding makes it even harder. Back in 2015, the lethal combination of heatwave and long hours of loadshedding resulted in the death of over 1,000 people. The KE management should look into this issue. Reasons like electricity theft are not enough to justify frequent electricity breakdown. The authorities should control loadshedding at least during the holy month of Ramazan.
In addition to making the lives of people miserable, unannounced loadshedding is badly affecting the city’s industrial sector. Many small-scale industries in the city have been closed because of unavailability of electricity. The government and the concerned departments should resolve this problem as soon as possible in order to avert any untoward situation.
