Arbab Ghulam Rahim appealed to the army chief on Monday to conduct a military investigation of the assassination of Benazir Bhutto.
Talking to reporters at Sindh Assembly after its session, Rahim said the army should investige to determine who ultimately benefitted from then Pakistan People’s Party chairperson.
Citing his reasons for inviting the military to investigate Benazir’s assassination, the former Sindh chief minister said even the Scotland Yard’s investigation into the murder had gotten nowhere. He claimed the PPP had been blackmailing senior leaders such as Naheed Khan and Makhdoom Amin Fahim regarding the December 27 incident.
He said he had been compelled to make the demand after Sharjeel Inam Memon attempted to drag him as a suspect into the investigation of the Karsaz bombings of 2007.
An army-led investigation would, in his opinion, would reveal who had benefitted the most from the late prime minister’s death.
PPP’s disintegration
Another former chief minister Liaquat Ali Jatoi — now an opposition MPA — predicted the PPP would fragment into factions once its current tenure ends.
He said the people of Sindh were displeased with the PPP government, which had been ignoring their problems, such as fixing prices of sugarcane and rice.
He said the PPP leadership would witness the wrath of the people if they dared to venture on the streets without the protection of bulletproof vehicles and their security escorts.
Jatoi alleged the voices of opposition lawmakers were being suppressed in the assembly so the problems of people were not discussed in the House. To prove his point, he claimed the land reserved for Jamshoro Power Plant and Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences, Jamshoro, were being encroached upon and sold away to builders.
