It is commendable that the PTI-led KP government is responding strategically to the transport needs of commuters within Peshawar. It is also considering means of public transport that would reduce the city’s pollution. The initiation of the Rapid Bus Transport project for Peshawar is expected to deliver these objectives. However, while the underlying idea of this project and its positive implications for commuters and the city’s environment have been drawn from developed countries, particularly advanced cities such as London, it is surprising that the safety measures put in place for such mega projects are not followed as per international guidelines.
Huge tranches are being dug across Jamrud road in Peshawar for the above-mentioned project, but without any safety arrangements for the workers and the people, including school-going children. The concerned departments should take a serious and immediate notice of the safety hazards these tranches are causing, and should kindly develop bylaws with proper implementation for civil – work-related safety measures.
