MARDAN: The provincial government has appointed Dr Jahanzeb Khalil as the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan with immediate effect.
A notification issued by the Higher Education Department said that under Section 12 A(1) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa University (Amendment) Act 2016 the government has appointed Dr Jahanzed Khalil as Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the Abdul Wali Khan University till his retirement.
Dr Jahanzeb Khalil has done PhD in Pakistan Studies from the University of Peshawar. He also served as dean at the Hazara University.
Jahanzeb Khalil also remained member of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Textbook Board Peshawar. Presently, he was working as Dean of Social Sciences faculty at the Abdul Wali Khan University. It may be noted that Dr Ihsan Ali, who was the first vice-chancellor of the Abdul Wali Khan University, retired on March 20, 2017.
The university was being run without the vice-chancellor when the student Mashal Khan was lynched by fellow students and university employees on April 13 after being accused of committing blasphemy.
The university has been closed since then even though its students, their parents and activists of various political parties have repeatedly asked the government to order its reopening.
