‘Solar energy most efficient for irrigation system’ From Our Correspondent FAISALABAD: German expert Dr Gerwin Dreesmann has said that solar energy is the most efficient and cost effective energy for irrigation system, especially at the time when Pakistan is facing energy and water crises. He said this during a meeting with UAF Vice-Chancellor Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan here on Friday. Dr Gerwin said that water scarcity issue was hitting the globe as melting water reservoirs, climate changes and changing weather patterns were posing threat to the life. He said that Germany was focusing on solar energy for irrigation purposes. Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan said that the country was exporting $2 billion dollar rice at the heavy cost of water as rice consumes 44 gallons of water for 1kg production only. He said that Pakistan was placed in red zone in water scarce countries. It was need of the hour to switch focus on water efficient crops, he added. He said that the country was importing pulse and edible oil worth $4 billion. He said that the Punjab Bioenergy Institute was being set at the university. A 100 Kilowatt bioenergy plant would be established at the campus to promote the technology, he added. Dr Allah Bakhsh and others also spoke on the occasion.
