LAHORE
Child rights organizations and activists working for the welfare of children Friday strongly condemned torture of schoolchildren in the provincial metropolis on Thursday.
In a statement, Rashida Qureshi demanded Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Inspector General Police (Punjab) take urgent action against police officials involved in the torture incident.
Qureshi said the torture incident reflects that the government is not ready to acknowledge the right to peaceful protest by citizens. Child rights activist Iftikhar Mubarik stated in 1990 the government of Pakistan ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Children (UNCRC) but after passage of 25 years implementation on the UNCRC remained a question mark in Pakistan due to lack of political will.
