Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, when pressed for his ministry’s role in the current petrol crisis at a news conference, absolved himself of shouldering the responsibility and termed the crisis a conspiracy against the government. After a while, Petroleum Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, showing an iota of leadership, not only apologised but also called upon the nation to take him to task if found guilty.
Normally, a cabinet, after discussing a subject thoroughly, comes out with one policy regarding the issue at hand. In this way, a government looks composed and does not risk losing public confidence. The current dichotomy between the two ministers’ approaches corroborates the fact that Nawaz Sharif’s cabinet is not on the same page. In this situation how can the government cater to the problem at hand and gain people's trust? Lastly, the finance minister, who is a linchpin of the PML-N government, is advised to lead from the front instead of pointing accusing fingers at others.
