LAHORE: An Ahmedi was shot dead allegedly by a target killer in the Sabzazar police limits on Friday. Police have removed the body to morgue for autopsy and started investigations. The killer fled the scene unhindered.

The victim was identified as Dr Ashfaq Ahmad, 68, a resident of Sabzazar. He was riding a car along with his grandson and a friend when a biker wearing a helmet intercepted him near the Shah Fareed Chowk. He fired into his temple. As a result, he died on the spot while the other car riders remained unhurt.

Police and Edhi ambulance reached the scene after being informed and rushed the victim to hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police and forensic experts collected evidence from the scene and recorded statements of eyewitnesses. Police have also started collecting CCTV footage from nearby cameras.

Jamaat Ahmadia Pakistan spokesperson Saleemuddin has termed the incident a target killing. He condemned the killing of two Ahmedis in Punjab during the last 10 days. He said a prominent lawyer was killed in Nankana Sahib a few days back and on Friday a famous veterinary doctor was shot dead in Sabzazar, Lahore. He said Dr Ashfaq was an active member of the community and demanded action against culprits who have launched a heinous campaign against the community. He  said members of their community were being killed on religious grounds despite the launch of Operation Raddul Fasaad. On the other hand, police have initially termed the incident a result of an old enmity.

A police officer said investigations would be conducted on merit, keeping in view all aspects including target killing. He said the killer would be arrested soon. DIG Operations Dr Haider Ashraf said it would be too early to ascertain the motive behind the killing.
