Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has demanded a parliamentary commission to investigate the claims of former ambassador Husain Haqqani that his connections made it possible for the US to capture Osama Bin Laden in May 2011. The defence minister should, first of all, ask his government to publish the Abbottabad Commission Report, led by Justice Javed Iqbal, as soon as possible to reveal the true facts behind the ‘Memogate’ scandal. The memo is alleged to have been drafted by Haqqani at the request of former president Asif Ali Zardari and was delivered to Mike Mullen through the then National Security Adviser James L Jones.
It is pitiful that some people belonging to the civil and military elite always play with the sovereignty and autonomy of the country. In 1971, the whole nation was humiliated when Indian forces routed Pakistan in a war that led to the creation of Bangladesh. The Hamoodur Rahman Commission was set up in 1972 to find the truth behind the incident but nothing was revealed. Similarly, the Abbottabad Commission Report was submitted to the PM on January 4, 2013 but its findings have not been made public till now.
