In 2007, the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissue Ordinance was the country’s first act to criminalise organ trafficking. It was later followed by the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act in 2010. However, the increasing rate of organ trafficking cannot be subdued. Illegal transplantation is rampant in the country, especially in Rawalpindi. The trafficking mafia takes advantage of the desperation of the poor and convinces people to to sell one of their kidneys against a large amount of money. At times, people are kidnapped for such heinous acts.
The laws are there in our country, but they are not being implemented. This is why the organ trafficking mafia is flourishing day by day. The concerned authorities should come up with better strategies to launch a crackdown on these criminal activities.
