LAHORE

Specialised Healthcare and Medical Education Secretary Najam Ahmed Shah has said that construction work on the Surgical Tower of Mayo Hospital is now on fast track and finishing of the physical infrastructure is in progress.

“This project would be completed in the next calendar year for which government has provided Rs 660 million. Rs1186 million has so far been spent on the project,” he said while talking to the reporters after visiting the under-construction Surgical Tower at Mayo Hospital on Tuesday.

Najam Ahmed Shah visited the whole building and inspected the work on installation of HVAC system, besides other construction and finishing work.

Mayo Hospital Chief Executive Prof Asad Aslam, Dr Tahir Khalil, Dr Atiq ur Rehman, Project Director Prof Ibrar Ashraf, Prof Khalid Masood Gondal and officers of C&W Department were also present. The health secretary said that the Surgical Tower was a mega project having 400 beds as well as 18 operation theatres which was equal to two DHQ hospitals. He said that experts had estimated two years time for completion of the project, however, he (secretary) had directed to further accelerate the work on the project and complete the things which were in the pipeline. As the government is funding the project fully, therefore, it would hopefully be completed during calendar year 2017.

While responding to a question, Najam Ahmed Shah said that as soon as the Surgical Tower was completed the master plan of Mayo Hospital would be started. He said that the surgical wards and operation theatres would be shifted to the Surgical Tower and renovation of the main building would start.

Project Director Prof Abrar Ashraf said procurement of 55 sets of medical equipment out of 90 had been completed and SNE for human resource was also completed.

Najam Ahmed Shah observed that Mayo Hospital would have a new look after completion of the Surgical Tower.
