PESHAWAR: The city police on Thursday killed an extortionist and arrested another during a raid in the provincial metropolis.
Senior Superintendant of Police (SSP) Operation, Mian Saeed, said at a media briefing that the slain extortionist was later identified as Nabiullah, son of Muhammad Zaman, an Afghan national, presently living in Tehkal area. He said the arrested extortionist was identified as Salman, son of Ihsan, a resident of Tehkal.
The senior cop said the police started investigation against the extortionists on the complaint of Mina Baz, son of Noor Baz, a resident of Jamrud, presently living in Phase-1 of Hayatabad. The complaint was registered on December 24, 2014 at the Hayatabad Police Station.
The police officer said that the complainant provided the cell number through which he was receiving threats from the extortionists claiming to be leaders of a banned outfit. He said the extortionists asked the complainant to pay them Rs5 million or else he would be killed and his plaza blown up.
The SSP operation said that police team was constituted for action against the extortionists under his supervision. It was headed by SP Cantt Faisal Shehzad. He said that ASP Hayatabad Rana Umar Farooq, SHO Shahjehan Afridi and ASI Nauman Khan traced out the accused persons.
The police officer said after arrest of the two accused, one of them - an Afghan national — snatched rifle from one policeman and started firing when both were being taken for pointing to other accused. The police returned the fire and killed the extortionist, he added.
Separately, the city police arrested 60 suspected persons, including 20 Afghans, in a crackdown against Afghan nationals, who are living unlawfully in the city.SP City, Mustafa Tanveer told the media persons that the police conducted the crackdown. He said ASP Gulbahar Muhammad Afzal, DSP Suburb Rokhan Zeb, DSP City Gul Nawaz and Sahibzada Muhammad Sajad took part in the search operation in the city along with him.
The search operation was conducted at various areas of the city, including Phandu, Ijazabad, Yakatoot, Mushtaqabad, Bhanamari and Chuna Bhatti.The police officer said four proclaimed offenders were arrested in the swoop. He said two shotguns, one Kalashnikov, 14 pistols, 12 kgs charas, two snatched motorcycles, 12 mobiles and mobile cards were also recovered in the search operation.
