Aqeel, Yasir enter tennis tourney quarters
KARACHI: Country’s top players Aqeel Khan and Yasir Khan sailed through to the quarter-finals of Serena Hotels Asian Tennis Tour 2016 men’s singles event at the S. Dilawar Abbas PTF Tennis Complex in Islamabad on Friday.
The longest match in the 16 players’ draw was played between Yasir Khan and wild card entrant Mudassar Murtaza, which went to full distance.
Mudassar took the first set but Yasir bounced back and won the next two sets to record a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 win.
Others who have earned a place in the quarters are Shahzad Khan, Mohammad Abid, Abdal Haider, Heera Ashiq, Ahmed Chaudhary and Muzammil Murtaza.
In the ladies singles semi-finals, Mahin Aftab pulled a major upset by beating second seed Sarah Mahboob 6-4, 6-3.
In the Junior U18 event, Muzammil Murtaza continued his smooth run by eliminating Abdal Haider with a 7-5, 6-3 victory. Aman Attique brushed aside Yousaf Khan of Peshawar by 6-3, 7-5.
