PESHAWAR: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has deposited an amount of Rs40.12 million recovered from accused Javed Khan, budget officer Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police Department, in the national exchequer.
A NAB team raided the house of Javed Khan on February 26, 2016, recovered Rs40.12 million cash and expensive weapons during the house search, said a communiqué. The accused Javed Khan, budget officer KP Police Department, and Arshad Majeed, a contractor, were arrested by NAB on February 21, 2013.
On receipt of complaints, the director general NAB KP authorised an inquiry against the police officers and others for alleged embezzlement in procurement of weapons, equipment and vehicles in 2009-10 by violating government rules, thus causing loss to the exchequer.
During the course of inquiry, it was revealed that gross violation of procurement rules was committed by the purchase committee in awarding tenders to favourite contractors who had no previous experience of supplying such items and for which payments were made in advance.
The inspection committee was also found responsible for not carrying out tests/trials of weapons, ammunition and equipment according to procedure and obtained clearance reports from agencies concerned and the amount has been recovered from persons concerned.
