NAWABSHAH: A mock rescue operation on how to evacuate passengers of a wide-bodied aircraft on fire making an emergency landing was conducted here at the Nawabshah Airport to assess how well relevant bodies are prepared to deal with an eventuality of this nature.

Personnel of the Civil Aviation Authority, the Airport Security Force and some other relevant bodies took part in the drill.  The mock exercise comprised fire extinguishing drills, provision of medical assistance on the runway and shifting of victims to hospitals.

Chief Fire and Rescue Officer, Mumtaz Ali Soomro, who supervised the exercise, told the newsmen that Nawabshah Airport had the capacity for even a jumbo jet to land here as it was an operational airport and an alternative to the Quaid-e-Azam International Airport at Karachi.

The mock rescue operation was also witnessed by Deputy Commissioner Nouman Siddique, media personnel and students of the Quaid-e-Awam Engineering University.
