Aqeel, Shahzad, Ahmed and Muzammil into semi-finals

KARACHI: Top seed Aqeel Khan, Shahzad Khan, Ahmed Chaudhary and Muzammil Murtaza moved into the semi-finals of men’s singles event of the 2nd Benazir Bhutto Shaheed International Tennis Tournament at Islamabad Tennis Complex on Friday.

Seventh seed youngster Muzammil pulled off a major upset, beating second seed Muhammad Abid in a three-set encounter. Muzammil came from behind to record a 1-6, 6-2, 6-0 victory.

Fourth seed Shahzad recovered from a set down to beat sixth seed Mudassar Murtaza 3-6, 7-6(6), 6-3.

Aqeel thrashed Heera Ashiq to register a 6-4, 6-2 win.  

Aqeel’s younger sibling Yasir Khan lost his quarter-final battle against Ahmed, who recorded a 6-1, 7-6(2) triumph.

Ushna Suhail secured an unexpected berth in ladies singles final after she stunned second-seeded opponent Sarah Mahboob in straight sets 6-4, 6-0.

In men’s doubles quarter-final match, Muhammad Abid and Usman Rafiq pulled off an impressive upset, beating favourite duo of Aqeel Khan and Heera Ashiq 6-4, 6-3.
