MULTAN: The Anti-Narcotics Force foiled an attempt to smuggle 3.5kg heroin to Saudi Arabia and arrested a couple from Multan Airport.
The accused was identified as Muhammad Aslam Raza, 60, of Sargodha and his wife Nasreen Akhtar, 55. Customs Inspectors Zia Bhatti and Shafqat Awan told The News that they found the layers of a bag extraordinary thick and recovered heroin worth Rs 40 million. During investigations, Aslam Raza told ANF officials that he was a poor man and a prayer leader of a local mosque. He said that a local landlord had offered him and his wife for Umrah. He said that the landlord had booked their seats and given him bags, clothes and expenditures. He said that he was not aware of the presence of heroin. ANF officials said that they had expanded the investigation to apprehend real culprits. Mehr Qadir Bakhsh, a PIA official, said that the couple had preferred Multan instead of Lahore to leave for Jeddah because they were confident they would easily cross all the barriers.
12 illegal Afghans held

MULTAN: The police claimed to have arrested 12 illegal Afghans during a crackdown.
The Rahimyar Khan police arrested six Afghans from Chak 75/B, Sultanpur and registered a case against them under the Foreign Act. Similarly, six more illegal Afghans were arrested in Karor Lal Eisan, Layyah.
