Polio worker killed in Jamrud attack
MANSEHRA: Over 21,000 bullets of various calibers were recovered from a vehicle near the Afghan refugee camp in Sheikhabad and arrested two smugglers here, an official said on Wednesday.
“We have started investigation to ascertain either seized bullets are smuggled here to use in any subversive activity or otherwise,” Zulfiqar Khan Jadoon, the deputy superintendent of police (DSP), Urban, told reporters.
He said the security was put on high alert after the Quetta attack and when the police signalled a vehicle to stop, the driver sped away. The police chased the vehicle and intercepted it after a while.
The police recovered 21,000 bullets of different arms from secrete shelves and arrested Mohammad Rafique and Mohammad Faisal. Jadoon said that police were investigating the case.
JAMRUD: A health worker was killed when gunmen attacked a polio team in Ghundai area of Jamrud tehsil in Khyber Agency, official sources said on Wednesday. The gunmen, carrying sophisticated weapons, attacked the polio team during a polio vaccination campaign.
Assistant Political Agent Ziaur Rehman termed the incident an attack aimed at sabotaging anti-polio campaign in Khyber Agency. He told this scribe that they were committed to vaccinating about 0.2 million children in the agency. He said they did not postpone the polio drive after the incident and sent extra security contingents to the risky areas to ensure adequate security of health workers.
The official added that the health worker, identified as Fazl-e-Amin, sustained several bullet injuries and was rushed to a hospital in Peshawar but he died on way to the health facility. Soon after the attack, the security forces reached the place of occurrence and cordoned off the area. They also launched a search operation and arrested 16 suspects.
