E&T dept to abolish city-based vehicle registration number

New uniform registration system for entire province

LAHORE:

Punjab Excise and Taxation (E&T) Department has decided to abolish city-based number series for vehicular registration and replace it with a new uniform vehicular registration system for entire province in future, The News has learnt. 

Presently, E&T department has been issuing the city based numbers specifically for each city in Punjab. It has been observed that Lahore and four other major cities of Punjab have been involved in issuing maximum registration number for vehicles. Majority of vehicle owners use to obtain Lahore, Rawalpindi, Multan and Faisalabad numbers while rest of the other cities numbers were less attracted by the vehicle owners.

The new uniform number system would be available in all districts of Punjab and the E&T department would launch A-001 to ZZZ-9999 series for entire Punjab from January 2017.

The phenomenon of getting big cities registration number would completely be abolished and new uniformity in vehicular registration numbers would be observed after the launch of new number system.

The E&T department has decided to allocate G series for Government vehicles, SG for semi government vehicles, C for commercial vehicles while the rest of series would be for private vehicles. A senior official told The News that the new number system would bring uniformity and the monopoly of used vehicles sale would be uniform as earlier only big city registered cars could get good price at the time of sale.

Talking to The News, Director General Excise Akram Ashraf Gondal said that the new system would start soon after the data centralization of all districts data and so far around 24 districts data have been completed while the rest will be completed by December. Akram Ashraf said now no individual has to visit big cities for cars registration and anyone can get his number from any district of Punjab. DG Akram Ashraf said that the department is also going to launch E-Auction system with new uniform number system and people could get/reserve their numbers online anywhere in Pakistan.

Online Database would also be available after the launching of this new system and people where people could make their payments online and get their numbers and pay their motor taxes. He added that now all the districts offices of Excise will have equal opportunity to serve people in a better way and the workload from four big cities of Punjab will also be divided.
