KARACHI: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari on Thursday said it seemed that the reigns of the Election Commission of Pakistan were in the hands of someone else. He lashed out at the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for the last-minute postponement of the local government (LG) elections in Sindh, a private TV channel reported.
“Deferment of the LG elections in 81 union councils of Sindh in last minutes is a conspiracy to deprive the PPP of public support,” said Zardari.
“This decision is an attempt to save the political orphans from defeat,” Zardari said. “It was the PPP that made the ECP an autonomous institution... but now the commission’s reigns are in the hands of someone else,” he claimed.
Zardari’s statement followed the ECP secretary’s announcement that the second phase of municipal elections would not be held in 81 union councils (UCs) of Sindh on Thursday.
