Over one ton of hashish worth Rs 600 million have been seized during an action along the Pakistan-Iran border, said Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA) Director General Rear Admiral Jameel Akhtar at a press briefing at his office on Monday.

He said the action was jointly taken by the Customs Preventive MMC Gwadar and the PMSA.

Talking to media, Akhtar said that security personnel intercepted two suspicious boats. The drug peddlers managed to make a getaway with one boat, while the other was seized, he added.

The raiding team recovered high quality hashish weighing over one ton from the boat during search. The drug peddlers fled, taking benefit of darkness, he said, adding that the hashish cost Rs600 million in the international market.

According to him, the drugs have been handed over to the Customs Preventive MMC Gwadar Collectorate for conducting a probe into the matter.

DG Akhtar said eight ships would be added into the PMSA fleet next year for strengthening the security of coastal line.

"Four million gallons of effluent without treatment has been thrown into the sea, while 8,000 tons of solid waste is being released into the sea, which have harmful effects on human and marine life."

Talking to media, Pakistan Customs Collectorate Gwadar's Collector Saeed Akram said the PMSA and the Pakistan Customs had always taken actions against culprits and such kind of mutual cooperation would be continued in the future as well.

PMSA Deputy Director General Abdul Majid, Wajid Nawaz, Imran Bhalai, Kaleemullah and Mohammad Saleem Khokhar were also present on the occasion.
