Omar Shahid Hamid, the son of slain former KESC chief Shahid Hamid, has been appointed as SSP Intelligence for the Sindh police’s Counter-Terrorism Department, Karachi.

As per a notification issued a day earlier, Hamid, a Grade-19 officer who was awaiting a posting, has been transferred and deputed as the CTD’s SSP Intelligence, taking over from SSP Aamir Farooqi, who has been granted ex-Pakistan leave.

After successfully passing the CSS Examinations, Hamid joined the police force in 2003 as an ASP. His first appointment was at the Garden Police Headquarters. He then moved to serve as SP Lyari Town where he worked closely with the Lyari Task Force that was headed by slain SSP Chaudhary Muhammad Aslam.

After a hiatus from the police force, Hamid returned as SSP of the then-Crime Investigation Department in the latter half of 2000s. This posting paved the way for him to again work in coordination with SSP Aslam, who was then leading the Sindh Police’s Anti-Extremism Cell.

SSP Hamid also played an integral part in anti-terrorist operations in Karachi and Sindh, before leaving the country on ex-Pakistan leave in 2014.

He also authored two books, 2013’s ‘The Prisoner’, inspired by the 2002 kidnapping and killing of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl. His second novel, ‘The Spinner's Tale’, was published in 2015.

Muharram transfers ban

Another notification from the Sindh police stated that in view of the sensitive security situation during the month of Muharram, IGP A D Khowaja has imposed a complete ban on transfers and postings in the police department.

The provincial police chief has, through another notification, also barred all officers from granting any leave requests till the 12th of Muharram.

The first notification stated, “In wake of the upcoming Muharramul Haram, transfers and postings of police personnel from [the rank of] constable to inspector is hereby banned with immediate effect and until further orders.”

“All Additional IGs and Range DIGs shall ensure that no inter district and zone transfer shall be ordered during the ban period. Transfer posting shall only be allowed in case of extreme exigency, only after approval of CPO. This order shall be complied with in letter and spirit.”

The leave ban notification read as follows, “In wake of forthcoming Muharramul Haram, complete ban is imposed on grant of all kinds of leaves till 12th Muharramul Haram. In case of extreme exigencies such requests may be recommended to CPO or considered by the competent authorities under intimation of CPO.”
