ATC to indict Amir Khan on Sept 27
Karachi
Senior leader of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Amir Khan, was to be indicted on September 27 in a case pertaining to instigation of terrorism and provision of shelter to criminals, as per the date fixed by an anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Wednesday.
The court directed the IO to submit the final charge-sheet; non-bailable arrest warrants were also again issued against absconding accused including Raees Mama, Shahzad Mullah, Imran Ijaz Niazi and Naeem alias Mullah.
Another accused of the case, Minhaj Qazi, was already under detention in the murder case of Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC) managing director Shahid Hamid; the MD, his driver and guard were killed on July 5, 1997 in DHA.
Sindh Rangers had in a last year raid at MQM’s now sealed headquarters, Nine Zero, arrested Khan along with at least 60 other people and detained him for 90 days.
Investigation Officer Inspector Mohsin Hasan Zaidi through a special public prosecutor of Rangers had submitted an investigation report in court in which he had charge-sheeted Khan for alleged instigation of terrorism and harbouring criminals.
The investigation officer had placed six Rangers and police officials as prosecution witnesses in the previous charge-sheet.
On June 4, last year, Rangers officials handed over Khan to the police after registering a case against him and other absconding accused.
The report submitted by them had alleged that the MQM leader and others admitted during questioning that Khan was in-charge of the party headquarters’ security and he had along with Qazi and the remaining absconding accused provided shelter to criminals and were using them for terrorist activities in the city.
A JIT had recommended registration of a case against MQM leader and others, the prosecution concluded.
The case was registered under Sections 11V (directing terrorist activities), 21J (harbouring any person who committed an offence under this act) and 7 (punishment for act of terrorism) of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997 on a complaint of Rangers Deputy Superintendent Ashraf Hussain at the Azizabad police station.
