Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Faisal Vawda escaped unhurt after his vehicle came under attack in Delhi Colony on Friday while he was returning from the National Accountability Bureau’s office.
Talking to The News, Senior Superintendent of Police Saqib Ismail Memon of District South said the gun attack took place near Bacha Party Departmental Store on Chaudhry Khaliquz Zaman Road at around 4:30pm.
Vawda, along with another PTI leader, Imran Ismail , was coming back in his bullet-proof vehicle from the NAB office when an attacker riding a pillion passenger on a motorcycle fired gunshots at the vehicle from the driving side. Soon afterwards, another motorcycle-mounted gunman fired shots at the window from the other side.
However, both PTI leaders remained safe the bullets failed to penetrate the armoured vehicle. The attackers then fled the scene.
SSP Memon said police rushed to the spot in mobiles and cordoned off the crime scene. He said there were three bullet marks on the vehicle on the driving side, including one on the window, and the police found spent bullet shells.
He said it was early to confirm the involvement of any group, and PTI leader Vawda had not yet registered a complaint at Frere Police Station. He said police were watching CCTV footage of the routes used by the PTI leaders to get to the attackers.
Sindh Inspector General of Police A D Khowaja, taking notice of the incident, sought a report from the SSP on the firing incident.
According to a statement issued by the Sindh Police, Khowaja ordered that all available evidence should be collected and every step taken for the arrest of the culprits.
NAB had summoned Vawda to answer questions regarding an inquiry into the fraudulent allotment of amenity plots.
A notice had been issued a day earlier under Section 19 of the National Accountability Ordinance shortly after the PTI leader held a press conference at his residence.
According to the notice, hundreds of amenity plots have been allotted to a business conglomerate in the name of dummy companies and NGOs.
